Snowmageddon! We knew that we would get a lot of snow, but we had no idea that it would snow over 20 inches, much less that we would get another layer yet again on Monday.  Due to the snow, the school building is still closed down and many team members are isolated.  Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday, team members and neighbors Steven and Joseph went to each others’ houses to work on both the Chairman’s Award and the tee shirt design.  The building will be opened once again tomorrow, and we plan on having the most productive meeting of the year then.

It seems that the students can really only think of one thing: snow.  With predictions of several feet of snow shutting us down, the team experienced an interesting mix of feelings over the matter.  While we want to continue to push through with the season and stay on schedule, there is a certain part of our brain that had a childish desire for the cancelation of school.

The imminent inclement weather is pressuring our team to wrap up what we can. We are finally finalizing the frame of the robot.  By the end of this meeting, it will be ready for the installation of the motors and wheels, as well as the various “organs” of the robot (the battery, etc.).

Mr. Lucus, an old mentor and parent of a graduated member of Team 623, came back today to assist in the production of the frame and the drive train. With Mr. Krulik (also a parent of a team member), Mr. Lucus guided the mechanics committee in overcoming any challenges that they came across.  By the end of this meeting, the frame was practically completed and ready for motor/drive train installation.

It seems that for us juniors, we haven’t gone a single year without using holonomic drive with mecanum wheels.  This year, our team concluded that having such a drive system would be superior in maneuvering, a priority that we have deemed of uttermost importance.  Brian lead the mechanics committee in the task of implementing holonomic drive, dismantling and recycling the wheels from our old Twitchy (R.I.P. January 2009 - February 2010).

Meanwhile, it seems that the rest of the team can only think about two things: the kicker and the imminent snow.

Two projects are currently demanding the majority of the team’s manpower resources.  One task is still the development and production of our kicker.  What is new is the beginning of the production of our test field.  In order to utilize some of the parts it had to offer, we began the dismantling of our very own Twitchy, which was our rather …hyper FRC robot from the 2008 competition.

An incredible and undeniable truth was overheard today: “You can never overkill with power tools.”
